What are eco-design advisors?
Advisor training programs were held to encourage businesses to develop of eco-products as part of the Product Green Performance Improvement Promotion program sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2006, 2007 and 2008. “Eco-design advisors” refers to people who sat the advisor training program and set out to advise businesses in the Chubu region on environmental issues. Their principle function was to shed light on environment-related performance through methods such as life cycle assessment (LCA), and offer advice for future development.

Eco-design advisors cover a broad range of areas of backgrounds—engineers, environmentally-considerate management consultants, industrial designers and everything in between. By joining forces, this seemingly disparate create a powerfully coherent partnership that draws on their various areas of expertise.

Environment-related terminology
DfE [ Design for Environment ]
This refers to environmentally considerate design—“eco design”. It is the process of thinking about environmental repercussions of a product at the design and development stage, and the incorporation of environmentally considerate measures.
LCA [ Life Cycle Assessment ]
This is a quantitative method of evaluating the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life, including procurement of raw materials, production of components, assembly, transportation, use, repair and disposal.
CFP [ Carbon Footprint ]
This involves calculating the amount of greenhouse gases emitted throughout the life cycle of a product or service, converting it to CO2 volume and displaying the number on the product.
PCR [ Product Category Rule ]
When measuring carbon footprint, the product category rules for the pertinent industry and item are determined first, then the conversion to CO2 volume made is based on those rules.
