Here beside the Kin-shachi guardian deity of Nagoya, brought down from the castle roof for the first time in fifteen years, we consider culture’s role in times of disaster.

Igarashi Taro
Born in 1967, architectural historian/critic Igarashi is a professor at Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Engineering. He earned his master’s degree in 1992 and later received his doctorate (Engineering). He served as artistic director of “Aichi Triennale 2013” and was commissioner of Japanese pavilion at the “11th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition 2008”. He has supervised such exhibitions as “Impossible Architecture,” “The Window: A Journey of Art and Architecture Through Windows,” and “Understanding Ornamentatio: The Architecture and Rediscovery of Nihonbashi.” He received the 64th Art Recomendation Award, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Newcomer Award, and the 2018 Architectural Institute of Japan’s Education Award (for educational contributions). He is the author of numerous books, including “Architecture in Tokyo” (Misuzu Shobo, 2020) and “Architecture After the Collapse of Modernism: Revolution and Ideology After 1968” (Seidosha, 2018).

Ichihara Etsuko
Born 1988 in Aichi Prefecture, Media artist, fantasy inventor. Graduated in Studies of Media, Body and Image from the School of Culture, Media and Society, Waseda University. She has been creating artworks that interpret Japanese culture, customs and beliefs from a unique point of view, and present new, technology- based approaches. She received the Excellence Award in the Entertainment Division at the 20th Japan Media Arts Festival and Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica. She has recently presented her works in exhibitions such as “Digital Shamanism: Japanese Funeral and Festivity” at NTT Inter Communication Center [ICC], Tokyo, 2016-17), “Ars Electronica Festival” in Linz, “Japan Media Arts Festival”. She is a basic concept design creator for the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai.
